Tibor Rubin survived Mauthausen as a teenager. When the U.S. Army liberated him, he vowed to serve the country that had saved his life and made good on it a few years later by enlisting for Korea. Captured by Chinese forces in 1950, he slipped out of a POW camp night after night to steal food from enemy supply stores, feeding sick and starving fellow prisoners for over two years. His sergeant, an open antisemite, refused to submit him for the Medal of Honor.

The paperwork sat buried for half a century. In 2005, after a Congressional review of overlooked Jewish veterans, President George W. Bush finally placed the medal around Rubin's neck. His story proves that when the system fails you because of prejudice, bureaucracy, or simple ignorance, the right outcome is still worth fighting for.
