🎖️ VALOR
Remembering Heroes—Veterans to Recognize on Memorial Day
There are many Americans have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. This Memorial Day, as we pay tribute to those we have lost, we’d like to share a few inspirational veterans.
Francis P. Hammerburg
Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Owen Francis Patrick Hammerberg
Francis P. Hammerberg was a United States Navy diver who served at Pearl Harbor during World War II, and received the Medal of Honor posthumously for rescuing two fellow divers. Disregarding all personal danger, he rescued one diver who had been trapped in a cave-in of steel wreckage while tunneling under a sunken LST.
After this rescue, Hammerberg went even farther under the buried hulk and, while able to rescue a second diver, was pinned down by a cave-in and lost his life. He is the last person to be awarded the medal for non-combat heroism.
First Lieutenant Aleda E. Lutz
Army flight nurse Lt. Aleda Ester Lutz
Aleda Lutz is among the highest decorated women in American military history. She served as an Army flight nurse and flew on 196 missions, more than any other flight nurse had logged in history.
She received multiple awards throughout her career, including a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. She was killed in 1944 when her mission plane was caught in a storm, making her the first service woman killed in combat in World War II.
Captain Jennifer Moreno
Captain Jennifer Moreno, surgical registered nurse for the CST
Following her graduation from nursing school, Jennifer Moreno commissioned into the Army and earned her certification as a surgical registered nurse. She deployed to Afghanistan in June 2013 with the Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment as a Cultural Support Team (CST) member.
In October 2013, while on a night raid with rangers, she heard a call to help a wounded soldier struck by a blast, and didn’t hesitate to respond. As she made her way to help the soldier, another explosion was triggered that ended her life, but her actions earned her a Bronze Star Medal with a “V” for valor. She was the first nurse CST member to die in action.
John Basilone
John Basilone, Marine Corps gunnery sergeant
John Basilone was a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle for Henderson Field in the Guadalcanal campaign.
On the first day of the invasion of Iwo Jima, in February 1945, Basilone was killed in action after single-handedly taking down an enemy blockade and leading a Marine tank under fire through a minefield to safety. His bravery was posthumously recognized with the Navy Cross and a Purple Heart.

🗺️ TACTICS
Last week, we asked for your help in our first ever community effort to provide all the veterans receiving our newsletter a comprehensive list of resources that YOU provided.
We collected all of the comments that were offered and put many of them as possible into a list below, along with some of the comments from the vets who suggested them themselves.
Thank you to everyone who participated. We will continue to provide this every month in hopes it may be a way for veterans to help other veterans.
Mental Health Resources Provided by Our Veterans
VA CBOC
Mental Health Counseling through VA Vet Center - “My counselor helped me as I transitioned off active duty back into the civilian world. The counseling is free and I highly recommend it.”
Mental Health Provider & Video Connect Courses. - “I’ve been enrolled in a four week insomnia class and a nine week Whole Health class and have learned lots of good concepts on mental health issues but it takes a lot of practice.”
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a local LCSW
VA Psychologist
Regularly scheduled conferences (many telehealth through Zoom monthly)
VA Community Care - “I had access through my VA care, even though I was not service connected (I got service connected this year). It is wonderful to use the community care mental health… Ask your local VA, they can give you information about mental health in the community care setting. It has been very easy to utilize and it’s free.”
VA Social Worker and Veterans Outreach Center
Medicare
Homecoming by John Bradshaw - “It was a brutal book but it has helped me way more than anything else.”
For additional information about VA specific resources for mental health care for veterans, there is a catalog of resources provided on their website. Click below for more information.
