The VA’s 2023 Annual Benefits Report, released earlier this year, provides detailed insights into the demographics and benefits among different veteran groups, highlighting unique challenges they face with VA disability benefits.

Below, we’ve outlined some of the key statistics from this article that we think you’d find most useful.

Total Recipients: 6.16 million veterans and survivors receive compensation benefits.

Era of Service:

Gulf War Era: 57.7%
Vietnam Era: 25.5%
Peacetime Era: 15.2%
Korean Conflict: 1.3%
World War II: 0.3%

Average Disabilities:

All Veterans: 6.24 disabilities per veteran
Gulf War Era: 7.97 disabilities per veteran
Vietnam Era: 4.1 disabilities per veteran

Common Disabilities:

Tinnitus: Most prevalent across all groups.
Musculoskeletal Issues: Knee problems, back pain.
Hearing Loss: Significant among older veterans.
PTSD: Especially common among Vietnam and Gulf War veterans.
Lumbosacral or Cervical Strain: Common across all groups.
