What do V.E.T.S. want to know?

Inside, you can find…

  • 🎖️ VALOR - Real stories about real veterans fighting for VA disability benefits.

Most veterans walk away from their military service with a handshake and a benefits brief that covers maybe 30% of what they actually earned. The other 70% sits buried in regulations, waiting for someone to dig it up. What if the difference between struggling and thriving was just knowing the right forms to file?

Kyle Carpenter: One Grenade, One Second

On November 21, 2010, Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was 21 years old and manning a rooftop security post in Marjah, Afghanistan, with his best friend when a Taliban grenade dropped into their sandbags. Carpenter lunged onto the blast. It shattered his jaw and right arm, took his right eye and most of his teeth, and collapsed his lung.

His heart stopped three times before he woke five weeks later at Walter Reed. Nearly forty surgeries followed. Injuries like Carpenter's touch nearly every system in the body, and veterans facing multiple conditions, invisible wounds, or daily-living challenges often qualify for compensation well beyond a base disability rating.

Three Hidden Benefits That Could Change Your Financial Future

Aid and Attendance: The Care Benefit That Stacks

Even veterans already at 100% disability can add Aid and Attendance on top of their base compensation. With A&A included, a qualifying veteran without dependents can receive up to $11,271.67 per month. It isn't tied to your rating. It's tied to whether you need help with daily activities:

  • Bathing, dressing, or eating

  • Managing basic hygiene

  • Having someone come in to assist you in staying safe at home

The VA evaluates your actual functioning, not just your diagnoses. Veterans with severe PTSD, TBI, advanced diabetes, or degenerative diseases often qualify without realizing it. See if your situation fits.

Special Monthly Compensation: The Benefit That Multiplies

SMC-K adds $131.18 per month for each qualifying functional loss, and veterans with multiple qualifying conditions can stack them. Examples:

  • Loss of use of a hand from nerve damage

  • Foot problems requiring special shoes

  • Erectile dysfunction

The key here is functional loss, not pain or discomfort. SMC covers dozens of conditions veterans routinely miss.

State Benefits: The Local Advantage

Your state may offer benefits worth thousands annually, often through separate applications:

  • Property tax exemptions of $2,000 to $5,000 or more (some states exempt 100% disabled veterans entirely)

  • Vehicle registration discounts

  • Hunting and fishing license waivers

  • Reduced college tuition for dependents

Benefits vary dramatically by state. Check what your state offers; many veterans discover they've been eligible for years.

Your Next Move

Review your current conditions against these three categories. If you need help with daily activities, have functional limitations beyond your current ratings, or haven't explored your state benefits, start gathering your medical evidence now.
