Carpal tunnel is often dismissed as a minor desk-job annoyance. It’s not. The VA rates it as high as 70%, and it can open the door to secondary claims that many veterans never file. For many, it can be traced directly to years of repetitive-duty work.
This week, we explain what your carpal tunnel claim may be worth, how to prove it, and which secondary conditions you may be able to claim. We also share a senior attorney's breakdown of how to prove your VA mental health claim, from documenting your stressor to preparing for your C&P exam.
Do you have a hand, wrist, or nerve condition that affects your daily life?

Audie Murphy: The Most Decorated American Combat Soldier of World War II
Raised in a Texas sharecropping family, Audie Murphy falsified his age to enlist at 17 and became World War II’s most decorated American combat soldier.
At 19, during a German counterattack near Holtzwihr, France, Murphy climbed onto a burning M10 tank destroyer and manned its .50-caliber machine gun despite being wounded. After holding the position for about an hour, he led a counterattack that forced the enemy to retreat.
Murphy received the Medal of Honor and every U.S. Army decoration for valor, along with honors from France and Belgium. He later portrayed himself in the film “To Hell and Back” and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where his grave remains one of the cemetery’s most visited.

Your Carpal Tunnel Claim May Be Worth More Than You Think
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the median nerve at the wrist. Repetitive hand movements, forceful gripping, vibration, and prolonged wrist flexion or extension may contribute to or worsen the condition.
Military duties involving activities such as operating heavy equipment or performing mechanical maintenance may be relevant when supported by service and medical records.
Veterans with carpal tunnel syndrome may qualify for VA disability compensation through either direct service connection or as a secondary condition stemming from arthritis, diabetes, or other service-connected disabilities.
Carpal Tunnel Severity Levels
VA rates carpal tunnel syndrome based on severity and which hand is affected:
Complete paralysis (70% dominant hand, 60% non-dominant hand)
Severe incomplete (50% dominant hand, 40% non-dominant hand)
Moderate incomplete (30% dominant hand, 20% non-dominant hand)
Mild incomplete (10% for either hand)
How to Prove Carpal Tunnel Syndrome to VA
To receive VA disability compensation for carpal tunnel syndrome, veterans should:
Compile thorough medical records, including diagnoses, treatment history, and physician notes.
Include diagnostic test results such as nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG).
Secure a nexus letter from a qualified medical professional linking carpal tunnel to your military service or service-connected disability.
Provide detailed descriptions of how the condition affects your daily activities and functional limitations.
Complete a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam when requested by VA.
Secondary Conditions That Increase Your Rating
Carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to other health issues that may qualify you for additional VA disability benefits, including arthritis, chronic pain syndrome, tendonitis, and mental health conditions caused by chronic pain.

Your Testimony Alone Won't Prove a Mental Health Claim
If you're living with PTSD, anxiety, depression, or military sexual trauma, this video explains how to document your stressor, prepare for the C&P exam, and use behavior changes, witness statements, and lay evidence to support your VA claim.
In it, you'll learn how to prove service-related stressors, including MST-related PTSD when no official report exists, and why honestly describing your symptoms and their impact on work and relationships, rather than just your good days, is essential to receiving an accurate rating.

Dupixent Linked to Rare Skin Cancer
Were you prescribed Dupixent (dupilumab) and later diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL)?
Recent studies have linked long-term Dupixent use to an increased risk of CTCL, a rare skin cancer. If you took Dupixent for at least one month and were diagnosed with CTCL—or a subtype like Mycosis fungoides or Sézary syndrome—after your first dose, you may be eligible to file a claim.
Find out if you qualify. The case review is free and confidential.
