  • 🦅SUPPORT - Additional resources to help you stay on the right path towards the benefits you deserve.

This week’s edition of V.E.T.S. Advantage is about persistence, proof, and the power of telling your story.

First, we revisit the legacy of Audie Murphy, America’s most decorated World War II combat soldier. From a hard childhood in rural Texas to singlehandedly holding off hundreds of German troops in France, Murphy’s story shows how grit and courage can triumph over impossible odds. After the war, he turned his platform toward helping fellow veterans and speaking openly about the unseen scars of combat.

Next, we tackle the toughest challenges veterans face today: “unprovable” VA claims. Missing medical records, unclear service connections, or late-developing conditions can make approval out of reach. But as we explain, alternative evidence like buddy statements, independent medical opinions, and presumptive conditions can turn a denied claim into a successful one. With the right strategy and professional help, veterans can secure the benefits they’ve earned.

Finally, you’ll hear from Hill & Ponton’s Senior Attorney Shelly Mark, who breaks down a PTSD case tied to military sexual trauma that had been denied for over 20 years. By uncovering missing personnel records and using behavioral “markers” as evidence, her team secured service connection and back pay dating to the original claim. Overall, persistence and advocacy can even win impossible claims.

Whether inspired by history or looking for practical guidance today, this edition shows that courage and persistence (in the field or in the claims process) can change everything.

Now, let’s dive into this week’s insights to help you navigate the VA system with confidence and secure the benefits you’ve earned!

Audie Murphy: America’s Most Decorated World War II Soldier

Audie Leon Murphy was born in 1925 in Kingston, TX, one of twelve children in a poor sharecropping family. With little formal education and a father who abandoned the household, Murphy grew up carrying responsibilities beyond his years. After his mother’s death, he set his sights on the military, lying about his age to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1942 when both the Marines and Navy rejected him for being small in stature.

Once deployed, Murphy proved that determination outweighed size.

Fighting across Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany, he quickly earned a reputation for grit and courage under fire. By age 20, he had risen from enlisted rifleman to lieutenant, collecting numerous decorations, including every U.S. Army valor award and high honors from France and Belgium.

Murphy’s most defining moment came on January 26, 1945, near Holtzwihr, France. With his unit pinned down and badly outnumbered, he ordered his men to fall back while he climbed onto a burning tank destroyer. From there, he used its .50 caliber machine gun to singlehandedly hold off more than 200 advancing German troops and six tanks for over an hour, despite being wounded.

When the enemy finally broke, Murphy led a counterattack that pushed them out of the woods. This act of near-superhuman resolve earned him the Medal of Honor.

By the end of World War II, Murphy had become the most decorated American combat soldier. His story was of raw courage, leadership under impossible odds, and the relentless willpower of a young man who refused to give ground.

After returning home, Murphy used his fame to advocate for veterans, speaking openly about what would later be recognized as PTSD. He also built a successful Hollywood career, starring in over 40 films, including To Hell and Back, the adaptation of his memoir.

Audie Murphy’s legacy is defined by his battlefield heroics and honesty about war costs. He remains a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and devotion to our great nation.

Unprovable VA Claims: How Veterans Can Strengthen Their Case

Many veterans face the frustration of having VA claims denied because they feel “impossible to prove.” The most common challenges are missing medical records and difficulty establishing a clear service connection between a disability and military service. Without these, it can feel like the odds are stacked against you.

Why Some VA Claims Are Hard to Prove

  • Lost or incomplete medical records: Fires, moves, and time can erase critical documentation.

  • Unclear service connections: Conditions that develop after discharge or weren’t recorded during service can be hard to tie back.

  • Mental health challenges: PTSD and depression may not surface until years later and lack immediate documentation.

How to Strengthen Your Claim

  • Gather alternative evidence:

  • Buddy statements from fellow service members, family, or friends.

  • Independent medical opinions linking your condition to service.

  • Research or studies that support the link between military exposure and your condition.

  • Leverage presumptive conditions: If VA recognizes certain conditions (e.g., Agent Orange exposure, Camp Lejeune water contamination, specific chronic illnesses), you only need to show you served in the qualifying location or timeframe.

  • Seek professional assistance: VA-accredited attorneys and Veterans Service Organizations can guide you through the process, strengthen your claim, and help you avoid common mistakes.

Case Examples

  • Tinnitus: Document exposure to loud noise in service, get audiology reports, and link secondary issues like sleep problems or depression.

  • Mental Health Claims: Provide detailed accounts of traumatic events, secure statements from witnesses, and obtain professional diagnoses tying symptoms to service.

  • Environmental Exposure: Show you were present in areas with known hazards and back it with research and medical opinions.

Future-Proofing Your Claim

  • Keep detailed, updated medical records (paper and digital).

  • Report injuries or health issues immediately during service to create a chronology.

  • Periodically review your records to ensure accuracy.

Even “unprovable” VA claims can be won with the right evidence, support, and strategy. By gathering alternative proof, leveraging presumptive conditions, and seeking professional help, veterans can improve their chances of receiving the disability benefits they’ve earned.

Were You Exposed to “Forever Chemicals” in Your Water Supply?

PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” are synthetic substances widely used in firefighting foams, water-resistant products, and industrial applications. These chemicals have been found in dangerously high concentrations in some water supplies, including on or near military bases. Learn if your military base was impacted using our Toxic Exposure Map.

Exposure to PFAS has been linked to severe health conditions, such as:

  • Testicular Cancer

  • Kidney Cancer

  • Ulcerative Colitis

  • Liver Cancer

If you or a loved one lived or worked in areas with PFAS contamination and have been diagnosed with any of these conditions, you may qualify for compensation.

How a Veteran Won a PTSD MST Claim After 20 Years of Denials

In this video, Hill & Ponton’s video guy Nate Flemming speaks with Senior Attorney Shelly Mark about one of the toughest VA disability cases she has handled: PTSD tied to military sexual trauma (MST). The veteran had been fighting for service connection for more than 20 years, receiving denial after denial. Like many MST survivors, he had no direct documentation of the incident, which made his claim especially difficult to prove.

When attorney Mark and her team reviewed the case, they discovered missing personnel records that were critical to understanding the veteran’s service history. Beyond that, they focused on “markers” often overlooked in MST claims, including behavioral changes, performance issues, and other signs in the record that pointed to the trauma. These indirect forms of evidence, supported by statements and expert review, became the backbone of the case.

Through persistence and creative advocacy, attorney Mark was able to secure not only service connection but also back pay dating to the veteran’s original claim. The outcome corrected decades of errors and gave the veteran long-overdue recognition for his service and suffering. Mark explained that this case shows why specialized legal knowledge and a willingness to think beyond traditional medical evidence are essential in VA claims.

The discussion ends with encouragement for veterans who feel stuck in the system. MST and PTSD cases are challenging, but they are not hopeless. Attorney Mark stresses the importance of seeking expert help early and using every available form of evidence to strengthen a claim.

With persistence and the right guidance, even a claim that seems “unprovable” can be won.
