Most veterans think getting from 70% to 100% means finding another 30% in ratings. That's the biggest misconception in the VA disability system, and it keeps thousands of veterans from the $3,938 monthly payment they've earned. The path to 100% has three routes, but the VA only advertises one.
What's your current combined VA rating?

Leroy A. Petry: The Hand He Gave, the Men He Saved
On May 26, 2008, Army Ranger Leroy A. Petry was already wounded by gunfire to both legs when an enemy grenade landed a few feet from two of his fellow Rangers. He moved forward, picked it up, and threw it clear. The blast severed his right hand at the wrist. Petry remained conscious long enough to apply his own tourniquet and radio for the evacuation that carried his wounded team to safety.
He returned home to a myoelectric prosthetic that responds to muscle signals, bearing a small plaque with the names of his fallen Rangers. In the years since, he has spent his career pointing other wounded veterans toward the resources and care programs they never realized were available. The benefits veterans need already exist somewhere in the system.

⚖️ EXPERTS
Three Ways to Reach 100% (Only One Requires Perfect Math)
Why 70% Plus 40% Equals Disappointment
When you're rated at 70% and get approved for a new 40% condition, basic math says 110%. The VA calculator gives you 82%. Veterans feel cheated, but the system makes sense once you understand it:
At 70% disabled, you have 30% healthy function remaining.
The new 40% condition affects 40% of that 30%, which equals 12%.
Add 12% to your existing 70%, and you land at 82%.
The VA rates against remaining healthy function, so each new condition works on a smaller pool than the last.
The TDIU Shortcut Most Veterans Miss
Total Disability Individual Unemployability pays the exact same $3,938 monthly as a 100% schedular rating, but the qualification path is completely different. You need:
One condition rated at 60% or higher, OR
Multiple conditions totaling 70%, with at least one at 40%.
Plus proof that your service-connected disabilities prevent substantial gainful employment.
A veteran with severe PTSD at 70% who can't hold steady work often qualifies for TDIU faster than grinding through more claims to reach 100% schedular. The focus shifts from mathematical precision to functional impact.
The P&T Advantage That Changes Everything
Permanent and Total status unlocks benefits that dwarf the monthly payment difference:
CHAMPVA health coverage for your dependents, saving families thousands annually.
Full property tax exemptions in many states.
Permanent commissary access.
These often add up to more real value than chasing the final rating points through endless appeals.
Your Next Move
Pull your current rating decision letter and find two numbers: your highest individual rating, and your combined total. Those two numbers determine which path makes the most sense.

Dupixent Linked to Rare Skin Cancer
Were you prescribed Dupixent (dupilumab) and later diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL)?
Recent studies have linked long-term Dupixent use to an increased risk of CTCL, a rare skin cancer. If you took Dupixent for at least one month and were diagnosed with CTCL—or a subtype like Mycosis fungoides or Sézary syndrome—after your first dose, you may be eligible to file a claim.
